Why Does My Ceiling Have Water Stains?

Water stains on your ceiling are one of those problems you should never ignore. That yellowish-brown ring or dark patch might look like a minor cosmetic issue, but it's almost always a sign of a bigger problem hiding above you. The most common reason is a roof leak. When rain gets through damaged or missing shingles, cracked flashing around chimneys or vents, or clogged gutters that overflow, water travels down and soaks into your ceiling. You might not notice it until the stain appears sometimes days after the actual rain. A leaking pipe is another big cause. If you have a bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room on the floor above, any small drip from a pipe joint, drain, or supply line can slowly soak through the subfloor and show up as a stain below. Even a toilet that splashes or an old wax ring seal that's failing can do this over time. Condensation is sneaky.
